The Watcher Release Date: Is the Watcher Based on a True Story?

The creator of American Horror Story, Ryan Murphy, is acting! He’s bringing another spine-chilling story to the screen, along with a new season of the horror anthology that will debut in secret in October and the Dahmer miniseries that every true crime fan has watched.

The suburban family in The Watcher on Netflix is recently settled at 657 Boulevard. What could possibly go wrong in the charming Westfield, New Jersey suburbs? Response: A LOT. Rapidly, their fantasy turns into a terrifying nightmare. They invest all of their cash in the closing deal, but they quickly learn that the area is not as wonderful as they had thought.

The eccentric elder neighbor who sneaks into the Brannocks’ home and hides in their dumbwaiter comes first (umm, heck no).  Then there is Karen (because there must always be a Karen), their realtor, and an old friend who makes them feel unwelcome.

She is unlikely to receive any major accolades. And there’s one more neighbor, Mo, who doesn’t seem to understand property lines (yikes).

As intriguing messages from someone known as “The Watcher” begin to arrive in their mail, the Brannock family’s initially cold reception quickly turns into something more ominous.

Their dream home quickly turned into a terrible nightmare after receiving messages informing them that their new home and young children were being watched constantly by an unknown person.

Is the Watcher Based on a True Story?

Yes, The Watcher is based on a real family, the Broaddus, who bought a house on 657 Boulevard in the suburb of Westfield, New Jersey, in 2014. Before they moved in, someone who called themselves “The Watcher” sent them a scary letter addressed to “The New Owner.”

Over the course of a few years, they got a few letters that called their kids “young blood” and said the house didn’t like the changes they were making.

The first letter said, “My family has been talking about 657 Boulevard for decades, and now that it is getting close to its 110th birthday, I am in charge of keeping an eye out for its second coming.”

“In the 1920s, my grandfather watched the house, and in the 1960s, my father did. Now is my turn. Do you know how long the house has been there? Do you know what happens inside 657 Boulevard? What do you want? I’ll figure it out.”

The Netflix show is based on an article by Reeves Wiedeman from 2018 that was first published in New York Magazine. The story has been changed a bit from the original article.

For one thing, the family’s last name has changed. Also, when the Broaddus bought the house, they had three young children, but the Brannocks only have two.

Even though both private detectives and police officers have been looking for the Watcher, he or she hasn’t been found as of today. Several neighbors and even the Broaddus have been named as possible Watchers.

The Broaddus family tried to sue the previous owners of their house in 2015 for not telling them that they had also gotten a letter from “The Watcher” before they moved in, but the case was thrown out.
