Women Talking was adapted from a novel of the same name that was motivated by actual occurrences, although not being based on a true incident. The author, Toews, who grew up in a Mennonite colony in Manitoba, once called her book, on which the movie is based, “a reaction through fiction” to actual events that had taken place in Bolivia a few years earlier.
