Is the Movie “Stillwater” Based on a Real-life Story?
Even if Stillwater is a work of fiction, it can sound uncannily similar to the Amanda Knox tale, one of the most well-known criminal cases of the previous 20 years.
When Knox was found guilty of killing her roommate, she was also a student abroad, but she also adamantly maintained her innocence. The Italian Supreme Court found Knox not guilty after he had served four years in prison.
In an interview with The Today Show, Damon claimed that while Stillwater was “loosely based” on the Knox story, it ultimately went beyond it.

“This is a story loosely based on that, but worked with some other writers and kind of made up a story around it as if a girl had gone and found herself in this situation where she was in prison for a crime that she says she didn’t do,” said Damon to hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie. The girl’s father was an Oklahoman who was a roughneck who worked on oil rigs.
What Was the Film Controversy About?
The debate surrounding the 2007 slaying of Knox’s roommate in Italy has been rekindled by the just-released Matt Damon film Stillwater. Initially found guilty of the crime, Amanda was eventually completely cleared of all charges by an Italian court. Even still, the case continues to garner attention on a global scale.
Knox has vehemently criticized the film for using her story as inspiration. Do I own the name I go by? Whether my face? How is my life going? She recently wrote, “My tale?
Justin Sterling of The Sterling Firm, a Los Angeles-based lawyer who focuses on defending clients in the entertainment and creative industries, believes that she lacks a solid legal case.
The director and co-writer of the film have acknowledged that the Knox case served as the direct inspiration for the script; nevertheless, “they made steps to remove critical features, like the location and a lot of other things,” according to Sterling. “This is a dramatization. It has almost entirely been dramatized.
Review For “Stillwater”
The best parts of “Stillwater” are when it delves into the paradoxes and intricacies of red-state clichés. The character of Bill Baker is played by Matt Damon with amazing nuance and sadness. Along with Thomas Bidegain, Marcus Hinchey, and Noe Debre, McCarthy co-wrote the movie.
But filmmaker Tom McCarthy is telling several stories in “Stillwater,” including Bill’s story of a hard-won second chance. While it is the most gripping, it is almost completely absorbed by the film’s irrational final act.
McCarthy, Thomas Bidegain, Marcus Hinchey, and Noe Debre collaborated on the script, which is partially based on the case of Amanda Knox, an American college student who was found guilty in 2007 of killing her roommate while she was studying abroad in Italy.
It also addresses the social divides and racial conflicts that are present in both France and the United States. As it drags on over its excessively long running time, the movie loses a lot of its appeal. Characters overexplain their motives and provide too many details.
