Review for “Now You See Me”
“The Transporter,” Jason Statham’s first film as a director, established him as an action star and was a significant financial success for EuropaCorp. The Incredible Hulk and Clash of the Titans, which had enormous budgets and were both dreadful, were his next two films to direct; he has since renounced them.
Louis Leterrier’s latest movie, “Now You See Me,” is a return to his earlier work. A brazen street magician, his ex-assistant (Jesse Eisenberg), a formerly well-known mentalist (Woody Harrelson), and a sleight-of-hand artist are the four main characters (Dave Franco, brother of James).
The four actors present a complex illusion in which a random audience member seems to be teleported inside the ventilation system of the vault as part of their main act, the Four Horsemen.
The magicians are brought in by the FBI the following day for questioning. In the movie “Now You See Me,” Morgan Freeman plays an arrogant former magician who has amassed wealth by disclosing the techniques behind well-known illusions.
The Four Horsemen’s techniques, which include enormous mirrors, doubles, hypnosis, a tonne of flash paper, and holograms, defy reason just as much as their stunts do. As the four characters’ true identities as wizards are revealed at the end of the film, they become outlaws and folk heroes. Freeman is the de facto on-camera narrator even though he can make the most awkward explanation sound good.
The heist’s explanation is hard “magic,” but it also doesn’t put too much of a strain on credibility. Leterrier’s “Now You See Me” emphasizes cinematography and extravagance that is ready for special effects. It features Zack Snyder’s “300,” “Watchmen,” and “Sucker Punch” as well as two directors of photography Mitchell Amundsen and Larry Fong.
It was made with anamorphic lenses and filmed on celluloid, giving the picture a vintage aesthetic and a more traditional feeling of widescreen space. The quality of the CGI is adequate for the movie, but the trade-off is that the digital effects appear less credible than they would in a digitally shot movie.
