Kim Go-eun, Nam Ji-hyun, and Park Ji-hu are the stars of the South Korean television series Little Ladies, which was created by Kim Hee-won.

It is partially based on Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 book of the same name, which was published in the contemporary day. On Saturdays and Sundays at 21:10 on tvN, it aired from September 3 to October 9, 2022. In a few areas, Netflix also offers streaming access to it.

Review For “Little Women”

Little Ladies, a TV series by Kim Hee-won, debuted earlier this month and has 12 episodes. It follows the poor Oh sisters In-joo and In-kyung as they battle to give their younger sister In-hye a better life. Despite offering assistance, mother Ahn Hee-yeon (Park Ji-young) feels resentful of having sacrificed her life to raise children and longs to leave South Korea and travel overseas.

She embezzles money from the family, abandons her daughters, and leaves to go meet her spouse in the Philippines. The result is a captivating mystery that is well worth watching. In-joo, a bookkeeper at a large company and a divorcee, borrows money from Jin Hwa-young, a coworker.

Later, when In-joo discovers her buddy dead—presumably from suicide—she wonders just who Hwa-Young was and who she was connected to. The plot is more of a mystery than a coming-of-age tale, and the first episode’s climax includes a cliché about “leading a double life.”

By manipulating well-liked characters and throwing out a large portion of the novel’s plot, Kim has defied expectations. Instead of the usual four March sisters, there are only three, and these sisters are considerably older than those in the novels.

Kim exudes a blend of Amy’s materialism and Meg’s sensitivity in her interpretation, adding a touch of whimsy and giddiness. However, In-hye reminds me a lot of Jo. In this scene, Park does excellent work by masking her emotions and the character’s drinking with stoicism.

In Little Women, In-hye plays a unique role in tying together the disparate stories of the three sisters. By making friends with Park’s daughter, she stirs up conflict and forces her sisters to rethink their approach to their inquiries.

Each one-hour episode is firmly rooted in the suspense subgenre and follows beats and cliches that anyone who has read a classic detective novel or watched a contemporary procedural show will recognize. In-hye experiences a fatal cardiac disease that necessitates a brief hospital stay and almost results in her death.

Choi Do-il, an executive who appears to be associated with Shin and Park, is introduced early on in Director Shin’s investigation into the missing 70 million won. The “will they or won’t they” arc continues as planned, but the prospect of a passionate relationship is wonderful. Wi, who just rose to fame internationally for his part in Squid Game, makes for the ideal love interest in Little Women.

One important theme from Alcott’s writing is examined in Kim’s series: poverty. Characters are characterized by their attire, and the score is filled with the clinking sounds of stacks of cash. The series’ sharp critique of class refers to the March family’s financial difficulties and their interactions with wealthier houses, but it elevates their poverty to a new level, driving the sisters to desperation.

Although the class tensions in Kim’s series are more dramatic and heinous than anything Alcott could have imagined, this is the strongest connection between Kim’s series and Alcott’s book. For devoted Little Women lovers, it’s worth watching this hybrid of Alcott, Agatha Christie, and K-drama.
