Wacken: 75,000 fans are sweating at the start of the festival

After two summers without a heavy metal festival, the fans have invaded the village with 1800 inhabitants in Schleswig-Holstein. Even before the official start of the Wacken Open Air (W:O:A, August 4th to 6th), metalheads’ greetings, known as French forks, are omnipresent. The fans are not impressed by the heat wave either. With temperatures around 11 degrees, many people are looking to cool off in the local outdoor pool.

» Yesterday we already had 2500 guests,” said the chairman of the local swimming pool association, Carsten Storm, according to the German Press Agency. That is five times the amount in one day with great weather at the weekend. On Thursday, the metalheads were sometimes queuing in front of the outdoor pool.

On Wednesday there was already a program on the smaller stages of the festival, including the Wacken Firefighters appeared. When the music procession of the Wacken Volunteer Fire Department entered the stage for its traditional festival performance shortly before eleven o’clock, they were greeted with chants of “Wacken, Wacken, fire brigade”. The area in front of the Wackinger Stage was well filled.

The official start in Wacken is on Thursday. But the speakers on smaller stages are turned on the day before, and part of the site is then already accessible. The two large main stages, in the middle of which a huge metal bull’s skull hangs, will not be used until Thursday.

According to the organizers, the Open Air has 75 000 visitors sold out. With the so-called Metal Train alone, around 750 heavy metal fans arrived on Wednesday with their destination Wacken Open Air. According to the federal police, the train was sold out.

Concerts by Slipknot, Powerwolf, Hämatom, In Extremo, Lordi, Slime, Venom and, for the first time, the Cologne band are planned until Saturday (until August 6th). Band Höhner.
