Review for “Wonder”

A young girl’s unbelievable possession by supernatural grace is the anti-miracle in Sebastián Lelio’s new movie, which he adapted from Emma Donoghue’s book. There may be a double feature of this with The Exorcist.

An arrogant male council of priests and worthies hires Lib, an English nurse, in 1862 to look into what appears to be a miracle in a little Irish community. Florence Pugh portrays her with passionate ferocity.

Anna has been without food for four months, but she is healthy. A steady stream of true believers visits her parents Rosaleen (Elaine Cassidy) and Malachy (Coalán Byrne) at their cottage, where they are allowed upstairs into her bedroom to speak with the adorable, devoted youngster.

Kla Lord Cassidy, a newcomer, plays Anna effectively. To achieve their goal of using medicine and religion, the parents have agreed that Lib will watch after Anna every eight hours, switching off with a nun.

Lib is first dubious, as is the roguishly attractive journalist William Byrne (Tom Burke), who hangs out at the neighborhood pub to report the story for the English press (the Daily Telegraph though he appears also to be working for the Illustrated London News). How is the youngster with the angel face deceitful?

Anna’s serenity still charms Lib. Lelio demonstrates her need for miracles, laudanum addiction, and self-harm. (The theme of dysmorphia made me think of Ruth Paxton’s masterful horror parody A Banquet.)

Anna, a young human sacrifice, cheerfully absorbs everyone’s misery since she instinctively feels it. Englishwoman Lib, who feels hunger the greatest in a nation still affected by the Great Famine and colonial starvation, threatens to force-feed Anna.

With a dramatic framing technique that separates us from the dramatization, Lelio, Donoghue, and Alice Birch seem to accept this. The film is propelled by Pugh’s sensuality, fervor, and humanity.

Pugh’s unadulterated energy carries everything and reveals the central paradox: to solve this puzzle, Lib must give in to it, have faith in it, win Anna’s trust, and learn the terrible reality about the child. Wonder is accompanied by hunger and despair.
