Review For “Tombstone”

It is both unlikely and ideal for Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer to be paired together on the arid streets of Tombstone. Hollywood’s version of a western, titled Tombstone, was helmed by the legendary George P. Cosmatos and debuted decades after the genre’s initial upswing.

It’s good to see that Cosmatos, Russel, and Kilmer’s efforts don’t go in vain because they combine to create one of the better westerns of the post-boom era, with the potential to momentarily resurrect the traditional western format.

Tombstone, which retells the lead-up to and events of the iconic Gunfight at OK Corral, is an amazing accomplishment that demonstrates that even in overused genres, you can still put something extraordinary together with the appropriate cast and crew.

With his portrayal of former lawman Wyatt Earp, played by Russell, who also wants to move to the mining town of Tombstone with his brothers Virgil (Sam Elliott) and Morgan, Russel takes the lead in the film (Bill Paxton).

His laid-back way of life is quickly upended by a group of ruthless gangsters, and the three brothers, together with Doc Holliday (Kilmer), decide to take matters into their own hands.

They take issues into their own hands mostly against their will, which highlights their unwillingness to assume law enforcement duties once more. The first half-hour of the movie is perhaps some of the best revisionism the modern western has ever seen because of the way it builds up to these moments and keeps the pace steady.

putting to rest a few more overused, obnoxious clichés while also establishing the Earp brothers and Holliday as formidable forces. Tombstone is brought to life to great effect by Cosmatos’ superb direction, which includes some achingly good shots.

The piece is brought to life with exquisite refinement by the costume design, which also features dusty streets and a plethora of pubs. Gritty, but with a hint of nostalgia for the genre’s heyday, Tombstone has a good balance of classic moments to appeal to the more seasoned western fan, but it also includes a significant amount of contemporary, Hollywood writing to keep it feeling lively and current.

The presence of Billy Bob Thornton, Stephen Lang, and Charlton Heston in supporting roles helps moviegoers who would otherwise be turned off by the big-budget charm.

The movie isn’t faultless, though, and when Wyatt and Holliday go over the west in search of the last of the cowboys, the montage of these escapades’ fast cuts feels very hurried.

This makes for a disappointing conclusion for the people we’ve spent the greater part of two hours with. The prior gunfights and the supporting cast members more than make up for it, though, and it can be partly excused.

Tombstone mainly relies on its love for the events it seeks to convey, with steely roles that work well with a filmmaking style that captures the essence of the genre so effectively.

Tombstone is an immensely likable film that features set pieces, gunfights, and fantastic character development. It is a terrific western overall, considerably superior to many works produced during the golden age.

Although it was not exactly the colossus of brilliance I had anticipated, Cosmatos’ contribution was nevertheless a welcome addition to a genre that had lain dormant for a long time before it.
