Review For “Shotgun Wedding”
In the glitzy but effective romantic comedy “Shotgun Wedding,” a couple experiences anxiety the night before their wedding. The movie follows Jennifer Lopez’s character, Darcy, as she tries to save their parents and the rest of their wedding party from pirates who have interrupted their nuptials on a small island close to the Philippines.
Darcy chooses to marry Tom, a washed-up minor-league baseball player. Although the exploits are straight out of a James Bond or Alfred Hitchcock movie, the emotional currents connecting the main couples are rooted in life’s ugliness.
While remaining in cartoon land, the violence approaches the point of being uncomfortable. Both Lopez and Duhamel are far too old for their parts, which appear to have been intended for someone in their twenties.
They are two endearing young people who still have a lot to discover about relationships. As part of their bedtime roleplaying, Darcy, dressed in a tank top and underwear, “tries” and “fails” to reach a book on a high shelf to flirt with her anxious fiancé.
Later, huge bridal trains are mocked, and Darcy’s formerly cumbersome gown is ripped in a way that makes her look like a sci-fi bounty hunter in a picture-perfect scene. Gregg employs his action-hero physique and wounded bourbon voice.
When bombs go off and golf carts fall off cliffs, His Tom—a gigantic tiny boy who fears disappointment—becomes known as a dependable action hero: Bond’s Yankee relative with low self-esteem.
The secondary cast gives strong supporting performances in the Mark Hammer and Jason Moore-directed movies Pitch Perfect and Steel Magnolias, respectively. By blurting forth bizarre, illogical things at odd times, Coolidge steals the film, while Marin is excellent in a role that requires underplaying.
Although Braga’s role is underwritten, she assumes that the character is secretive with her unearthly look. In his role as a haughty piece of beefcake who believes he is God’s gift and is attractive enough to keep failing upward, Kravitz stands out. The film hits numerous beats including some you haven’t seen before, but because of the exposition and lines filled with catchphrases, it feels forever.
The Last of the Mohicans, a film written and directed by William Goldman, demonstrates how to add a touch of poetry to everyday items. A speedboat appears in it, as well as a music montage and slow-motion action-movie badassery.
With Cary Grant’s “Die Hard” and other Howard Hawks screwball romances transformed into couples’ counseling, the film is a little too long and melodramatic. It also depicts a more comprehensive tale of personal development, showing how two independent individuals overcame their differences and came to work as a team.
