In order to rescue his passengers from a hazardous area they had to land in during an emergency landing, a pilot (Butler) teams up with a prisoner (Colter).

The movie was first announced in 2016; it was bought by Lionsgate in 2019, sold to Solstice Studios in 2020, and then was once again bought by Lionsgate in 2021. In Puerto Rico, it was filmed. On January 13, 2023, the plane was made available in the US.

Does “Plane” Have a Real Story Behind It?

MadRiver Productions produced a movie in 2016 based on Charles Cumming’s short story “Captain Phillips meets Flight Plan.” As they work to free the crew and passengers of the airline from a foreign captive, Torrance, Louis Gaspare, and Samuel Dele are followed in the movie.

The commercial jet was originally planned to crash in hostile Middle Eastern areas, but Cumming and J.P. Davis ultimately wrote the screenplay. The British Secret Intelligence Agency (MI6) approached Cummings, who has written 11 spy thrillers, but he declined to cooperate.

Butler acknowledged that he had contributed to the plot of the film by alluding to the scene in which Captain Brodie sees two of his passengers dead before the others are taken, hostage. Cummings was the hero, according to the studio, but he had to go and take action.

Review For “Plane”

The stupid title of “Plane,” an action film by Jean-François Richet, is not a deliberate artistic choice. Gerard Butler makes a pitch for a self-rescue operation in which he saves his flight’s passengers and crew from irate Filipino militants following a disaster landing. The Butler-produced film celebrates ’80s action storytelling rather than being wilder than usual.

The 14 passengers begin to panic as the plane prepares for a major collision, which makes the situation even worse. The co-pilot of Butler, Samuel (Yoson An), clocks the ten minutes they have left until they crash land on an isolated island in the Philippines while pilot Brodie Torrance does macho maneuvers.

A cop is handcuffed to a captured fugitive named Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter) near the tail of the aircraft. When the airplane lands in an unfriendly area, his past of homicide is helpful. With his RAF background and a rifle hidden in his jeans, Brodie guides him across uncharted territory in search of assistance.

At a sketchy warehouse, Brodie makes a communications breakthrough when a bad man approaches from behind and attempts to kill him. The ensuing brawl is remarkable, with the camera focusing primarily on Butler’s face as he grapples with this bigger man in a confined space.

From this point on, however, nothing is as thrilling or compelling, despite Richet’s efforts to amp up the threat by sending in masked militia men who show up and kidnap Brodie’s passengers and crew. Even Colter’s effort to make his stiffness reasonably fascinating is just a lot of action cinema gruel.

Hostage scenarios are rapidly resolved, boring gunshot exchanges are executed as if they were shot on different days, and even the hostages are quickly freed. It is a sizable gun supplied by two American black ops guys who were employed by an airline.

They later showed up and could fire bullets that flew through car doors and exploded rib cages. The picture has over-the-top, violent action similar to that in “Rambo,” along with a dramatic arc and scowling cardboard cutouts (2008). The movie supports its thesis that airline firms are willing to go to war for you while filming inside Trailblazer Air’s headquarters in New York City.

Hampton (Paul Ben-Victor), the airline’s CEO, uses his network of contacts to find and then defend the customers, including those American men who arrive with their own equipment. Tony Goldwyn’s character, Scarsdale, is a no-nonsense PR hotshot with plenty of attitudes who shouts, “If you have New Year’s Eve Plans, I just canceled them.” The heroism in this film is a little goofy, but it makes for an over-the-top joke with no punchline.
