The sitcom, which starred Zooey Deschanel, made its debut in 2011 to a generally favorable critical reception. It seems like another piece of excessively twee early-2010s ephemera when viewed from an optics perspective.

Give it some time to work out its kinks, though, and New Girl—which is currently available to view in its entirety on SBS On Demand—begins to become sharper, funnier, and less cloying.

I’ll be the first to confess that New Girl is hardly worth keeping the tab open for in its clumsy, arch early episodes. The first season of the show improves astronomically episode by episode, introducing strange drinking games and new love interests, both of whom serve to highlight the facile and childish natures of the main characters of the show.

Deschanel plays Jess, a 30-something recently dumped who moves into an apartment with three guys she met on Craigslist.
