Review For “Great Gatsby”
The third most creative usage of 3D, behind “U2 3D” and “Hugo,” is used in the Baz Luhrmann adaptation of “The Great Gatsby.” There are four or five experiments under progress in each scene in this technological and artistic lab.
The film is an epic melodrama that blends subjective filmmaking and old-school theatrics, classic music and current pop, authentic locations and fantastical backdrops, and psychological drama with sped-up humor. It follows Nick Carraway, the narrator, as he tries to balance the novel’s aesthetic gambits with a desire to play things straight.
The Prohibition-era locations in the novel (East Egg and West Egg, New York City, and the smoky wasteland in between) are depicted at the same time with outfits that are very visible and directed, without an increase in the gatherings.
The Cask of Amontillado, written by John Ladd and Robert Redford in 1915, is the basis for Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby.” The movie centers on Anthony Ladd’s portrayal of Leonardo DiCaprio, a mysterious character who is so mysterious that he is a projection of the book’s narrator yet is rendered understandable and painfully real.
Scenes are trimmed by Luhrmann to give the impression that the character has omniscience and can read people’s minds and emotions in addition to being able to see and hear for kilometers. Nick’s description of human nature as an uninterrupted series of successful gestures is brought to mind by Di Caprio’s performance.
As his lies and deceptions are exposed and dispelled, he becomes both menacing and pitiful. As soon as he begins to change, he topples down out of sheer terror. The conflict between the director and the audience is powerfully depicted in Baz Luhrmann’s “Gatsby.”
Similar to how DiCaprio humanizes Gatsby, Maguire gives Nick Carraway a face. Nick Carraway is an abstraction. Although the movie doesn’t idealize Carey Mulligan, she is the ideal physical and vocal fit for Daisy Buchanan.
Tom, played by Joel Edgerton, who fits the book’s description of the character as “hulking” and exudes the cheerful arrogance of a thug posing as a sophisticated guy with money, has joined the cast.
Jordan Baker, played by Elizabeth Debicki, stands out among the little roles for its excellent casting. Crowd scenes and CGI vistas cannot compare to the impact that the director’s real interest in the acting and character motivations of his actors has on the audience. Luhrmann wishes the adaption had been more compact and square, but it was too large and overdone.
