Is “Cocaine Bear” a Real Story?
The title of the new movie, “Cocaine Bear,” which is not a metaphor or a play on words, was unveiled in its trailer by the United Press International on Wednesday. The film centers on a cocaine-addled bear and the savage rampage that ensues after the bear’s cocaine binge.
The film, which will be released on February 24 and was directed by Elizabeth Banks, is probably going to get longer as it progresses. When the Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported that a 175-pound black bear had “died of an overdose of cocaine” in the 1980s following the discovery of a batch of the drug, that is when the actual story begins.
Just south of the Tennessee line, in the Fannin County, Georgia mountains, the bear’s body was discovered. After an autopsy in December 1985, Dr. Kenneth Alonso, the state’s senior medical examiner at the time, reported that the bear had consumed three to four grams of cocaine, though it may have consumed more.
Drug trafficker and former police officer Mr. Thornton were discovered dead in a parachute and Gucci loafers in the backyard of a home in Knoxville, Tennessee, on September 11, 1985. He also had a backpack with around 35 kg of cocaine in it and several guns.
Given Mr. Thornton’s history of drug smuggling and the fact that a key in his pocket matched the tail number of a wrecked plane discovered in Clay County, North Carolina, authorities assumed there was more cocaine nearby.
During several months of searching, the investigators discovered more than 300 pounds of cocaine. According to reports, the bear is on exhibit at Kentucky for Kentucky Fun Mall in Lexington, Kentucky.
