Review For “Charm City Kings”

Angel The Sundance smash “Charm City Kings,” directed by Manuel Soto, features a coming-of-age storyline so well-known that it references “The Karate Kid” and is likely aware that it shares elements with a dozen or so other movies of the same genre.

“Charm City Kings” is self-aware enough to reference “The Karate Kid” because it follows a well-known coming-of-age story. A stunning performance as Mouse is given by Jahi Di’Allo Winston. Meek Mill portrays the ex-con Blax, who adds realism to the bike club scene because of his ties to the community.

Another tale on the distinction between boyhood and manhood is “Charm City Kings.” Soto’s eye is still growing, but he has a knack for getting the finest performance out of his performers.

Before you know it, he starts making statements like “Boys wait for other people, guys go out and get it,” completely disregarding the fact that he is still a boy. I liked the smaller beats in “Charm City Kings” more than the plot.

Mouse and Blax are portrayed in the movie by Jahi Di’Allo Winston and Meek Mill. It’s tough to get past all the trite language and some of the choices that feel like they were made only to set up the climax in the final act.
