Review For “Catastrophe”
Catastrophe (Channel 4)’s greatest talent has always been its unmatched capacity to depict individuals who are brittle and spiky, behaving generally badly, and then to make us feel emotionally concerned about their disorganized, fragmented lives.
The more routine task of caring for the children contains much humor or misery. Unsurprisingly, there is no cloying familial sweetness there. It covers a similar subject as Motherland, a BBC2 comedy about harried parenting in east London’s affluent neighborhoods.
The third season came to a disastrous conclusion as Sharon faced the aftermath of the student scandal and Rob, who was off the wagon, inebriated, and distraught, smashed his car.
Unsurprisingly, there is no sugary family sweetness in this story; instead, she has her own “garden variety cry for assistance” after visiting a museum, and there is one scene that would be on Kids Say the Funniest Things in hell.

Catastrophe has always been good at the big things, but it is enjoyable to watch it becoming more blatantly ridiculous.
Rob’s conscience manifests itself mysteriously as Amanda enters his life at a rate that calls for a restraining order. Who knows where Amanda’s interest in him will lead us? At least in the first episode, the overall story of Rob and Sharon’s long-term romance is handled lightly.
Catastrophe’s episode from this week is hilarious, nimble and swift, gorgeously self-assured, and incredibly amusing. But even from this relatively lighthearted first episode, I am already dreading the conclusion. A stormy relationship like the one between Rob and Sharon might have an endless amount of push-pull.
