Mel Gibson produced, co-wrote, and directed the historical epic horror movie Apocalypto in 2006. Rudy Youngblood, Raoul Trujillo, Mayra Sérbulo, Dalia Hernández, Gerardo Taracena, Rodolfo Palacios, Bernardo Ruiz Juarez, Ammel Rodrigo Mendoza, Ricardo Diaz Mendoza, and Israel Contreras are among the Native American and Indigenous Mexican performers who appear in the movie.
The only native people represented in the movie were Maya. All of the speech is in a contemporary rendition of the old language of the setting, much like Gibson’s earlier film The Passion of the Christ. Here, the indigenous Yucatec Mayan language is spoken along with subtitles, some of which use the term “Mayan” to describe the language.

Review For “Apocalypto”
I genuinely like Mel Gibson’s direction. The Mayan civilization’s downfall is the subject of the movie “Apocalypto.” In it, Jaguar Paw’s village is assaulted by some hunters, and that event is told.
Can a culture like this, which is (relatively speaking, of course) technologically advanced yet fundamentally corrupt, last forever? At times, it contrasts with “The Last of the Mohicans” and makes it seem docile.
After spending so many years reading about one of my country’s old societies in history books as a child, “Apocalypto” signifies the chance to see it on screen for the first time.
Although the movie was shot on a grand scale in a real jungle with sets that were mostly real size and real creatures, it’s the minute things that stay with us. These decisions, which would have sounded absurd in any contemporary language, were wise ones made by Gibson.
