With Andreessen Horowitz and Y Combinator, two of the best known are investing Tech venture capital firms in VR. Andreessen Horowitz justifies the investment, among other things, with the high growth of the VR gaming market compared to traditional gaming.
The VR basketball game “Gym Class” started as a simple feasibility demo in the Sidequest Store. It’s now a successful insider tip: the basketball game was downloaded around a million times in the Oculus App Lab.
Gym Class wants to capture the real basketball game as realistically as possible from a first-person perspective. You can play it alone or together with friends and strangers. It is purely optimized for VR.

Gym Class
According to Paul Katsen, head of product at Gym Class, the team sees its own app more as a social meeting place than as a pure video game. The aim is to create a community around sports and basketball culture. The team wants to continue to focus on basketball.
Investment in the basketball metaverse – or a Takeover speculation?
The social promise in combination with a clearly defined target group should also luring investors – along with the prospect of the studio behind Gym Class possibly being bought out by Big Tech.
The game mechanics of Gym Class are completely geared towards VR: On the one hand, this currently limits the range, which is bad in terms of marketability, for example. On the other hand, the team has a high level of VR expertise, which should be interesting for Meta and Co.
Andreessen-Horowitz -Investor Jack Soslow praised the mature and precise movement gameplay of Gym Class on Twitter and the already intact playful social component, which naturally unfolds around the core game.
Successful VR apps would rely on virtual reality’s sense of presence and motion control – two things that only VR offers. In addition, VR is one of the fastest growing gaming markets.
