Anne with an E is a Canadian television series loosely based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s 1908 classic work of children’s literature, Anne of Green Gables.

Moira Walley-Beckett created the show for CBC, and it stars Amybeth McNulty as orphan Anne Shirley, Geraldine James as Marilla Cuthbert, R. H. Thomson as Matthew Cuthbert, Dalila Bela as Diana Barry, and Lucas Jade Zumann as Gilbert Blythe.

Anne worked as a helper in several families before being institutionalized after she was orphaned when her parents disappeared when she was only a few months old.

Marilla loses trust in Anne after a while, owing to her reputation as an anonymous youngster and the practical inability of a younger girl to contribute anything.

When Marilla can’t find a brooch, it appears that her mistrust of Anne is revealed. By shipping her away, the Cuthberts “return” her to the school.

Even though she returns to the orphanage, she is afraid to enter due to the bullying she experienced there and instead returns to the teaching station.
