David Hollander created American Gigolo, an American neo-noir crime drama television series.
It is based on Paul Schrader’s 1980 film of the same name, which he wrote and directed.
Jon Bernthal, Gretchen Mol, Lizzie Brocheré, Gabriel LaBelle, Leland Orser, and Rosie O’Donnell co-star in the series as the protagonist of the original film, Julian Kaye.
What is the Storyline of American Gigolo
A modern-day retelling of the classic film. Julian Kaye, played by Jon Bernthal, is introduced in the show 18 years after being accused of murder and is now attempting to establish himself in the Los Angeles sex industry.
At the same time, he is searching for the truth about the incident that sent him to the correctional facility all those years ago, as well as hoping to reunite with Michelle, the only person who has ever truly loved him. Gretchen Mol will play Michelle.
The new Julian, played by Jon Bernthal, is fantastic, and he has many more layers than Richard Gere did in the original film. Schrader’s film lacks the necessary edge and tawdry excesses, and its characters are underdeveloped and underwritten.
Bernthal has Gere’s dark profile, but his face is craggier and less attractive than Gere’s. But Bernthal hooks us in a way that Gere couldn’t.
